Combining Opportunities for Game-Making Goals (GHD030)
March 2, 2016Read moreWednesday was a day of combining work goals with personal goals. The personal goal in this case is Make a Video Game, and the work goal is an NSF grant programming gig that extends prior work that happens to have a lot of game-like technology. As I reviewed the new grant information, it occurred to me how much system work would be involved, and how that system work was directly applicable to certain types of multiplayer games. And thus, I have decided to classify this new work as GHDR goal-relevant work. (more…)

Impromptu Music Day (GHD029)
March 2, 2016Read moreOn Tuesday, I met with my friend Rebecca to play with Garageband, the ubiquitous Macintosh song creation software that is now available for free from the AppStore. Rebecca, a flutist, had a few questions about how it worked, and while I wasn’t familiar with it at least I had some familiarity with this type of software. (more…)

Music Song Lists for Composition Goal (GHD027)
February 29, 2016Read moreMuch of Sunday was spent assembling lists of music videos on YouTube in preparation for the Music Composition video journals. The idea for the first few journals will be to just watch a few of them at a time and say whatever is popping into my head. As I come across interesting songs or song experiences, I’ll add them to the lists. I’ve added the lists to Music Composition Goal Page on the sidebar.
Stuff Learned and GHDR Points Earned
Today was a gathering day, so I don’t think I scored many points…but let’s see.
PTS DESCRIPTION 10 Packaged the lists and posted it to a public page! Surprise! 2 Reduced scope of a task to make it faster. Whittling down the task of the server move to just a collection task for today. 1 Researched music on youtube! That’s 13 points. Better than expected! Progress made!

Adapting an Old Logo for New Work
February 28, 2016Read moreWhen I was working on my website yesterday, I wanted to replace the ugly black “default thumbnail” that appears for graphicless posts with something a bit lighter. I remembered my old SEAH MICRO logo from a few years ago, dusted it off, and made it work as a stand-in. I actually like the logo a lot, and realized that it might be a good fit for me now.
I added the words explore learn build share, which appeared in my 2012 business cards. I think it works nicely because it matches the four bubbles, which have a cyclical arrow thing going on to represent iterative process while evoking a science-like association with 50s-style atom bombs. Also, the bubbles are a familiar element of my form designs.
I tried a few levels of boldness for the davidseah.com text, settling on the last variation as a good balance. I can imagine this design working well as something engraved on a metal plate or a stamp. I guess I’ll have to see what it looks like when I design some test packaging around it. The graphic at the top of this post is just a quick visualization to see if Photoshop had added improved 3D texturing capabilities (it doesn’t seem to have), but it doesn’t look right. Setting up the same project in Modo, the 3D modeller I have a license for, might be educational! The background texture is from a website called texturelib.com that allows use of their assets if credit is given. They have a lot of nice textures to work with.
