Jack Conte on “Working to Publish”
August 25, 2020Read moreA few days ago I came across Work to Publish. It’s a video from Jack Conte, who is half of the musical duo Pomplamoose and co-founder of Patreon. He is super-cheerful and enthusiastic, and I’d been following him for years because his energy is really close to the kind of feeling I want to strive for in my work: engaging, welcoming, novel, and happily quirky.
The link to the video is below, but briefly Conte’s insight is that finishing a project is fraught with anxiety. One would think that finishing a creative work would bring a sense of relief and accomplishment, but it actually doesn’t! That’s because finishing a creative work doesn’t really have a sense of finality in the way that, say, a sports match does. Conte calls it a “vocabulary problem”, because the work of being a creator isn’t to finish works as much as it is to PUBLISH. It’s a great video; check it out below!

GHDO for August 8: Thoughts Sailing Across Still Water
August 9, 2020Hey guys! It’s August 8, which means it’s time for another (NOT) Groundhog Day Resolutions Review.Read moreIn last month’s report I described how extreme social isolation seemed to be one way I could get things done more consistently. I had even found precedent for this in the book The Creative Habit. Thus encouraged, I vowed to put **extra emphasis*** on enforcing my creative isolation to see if I could make better progress on the software work that has been dragging on.
So how did the Creative Bubble work out? Pretty well…with an unexpected twist! (more…)

“Embracing the Creative Bubble” Followup
August 4, 2020Read moreIn my last not Groundhog Day report I had a theory that The Creative Bubble—essentially a very strict form of creative isolation—might help me overcome the continual resistance I feel toward work. My attitude had been poor and I was irritable all the time; perhaps by unapologetically adapting an extreme creative isolation so I could FINALLY GET SOME WORK DONE IN PEACE would help alleviate the frustration?
The answer is YES…with a surprise twist: the long-time resistance I feel was maybe not my fault at all.

Winning the Day in the DS|Cafe
July 27, 2020One of the features I like on the Virtual Coworking Cafe Discord is the special WINNING THE DAY role, which is awarded periodically when someone posts something that seems like a “win”.Read moreIf you want to get an earful of my practice and theory with communities, check it out the full article on Patreon; I posted it there because it’s highly relevant to my stated Patreon’s mission of “creating nerdy coworking communities” :-)

GHDO for July 7: Embracing the Creative Bubble
July 8, 2020Happy July 7th! In this month’s “(Not) Groundhog Day Resolutions” review, I’m coming to the close of an investigation into task prioritization as a useful productivity strategy. An unexpected insight is WOW I HAVE A LOT OF FRUSTRATION IN ME and while prioritization by itself wasn’t the answer, I may have learned a few new tricks to deal with it.Read moreLet’s get into it!
