- What does your daily routine look like? Your week? Do you use any apps or products for productivity and organization?

- How do you keep your professional skills current? What learning resources do you take advantage of?
And more!

Something I Love: Desktop APM (GHD013)
February 14, 2016Read moreBeing that it’s Valentine’s Day, I’ve decided that today’s Goal Related Activity will be to share something I love, a little utility called Desktop APM (Windows only). It monitors what applications you have open and measures your “actions per minute” (APM) in terms of keystrokes and mouseclicks, building up a graph over time. It ends up being a helpful “what did I do today?” tool, if you have a single PC that is, and with its graphing capabilities can show you when you were most furiously typing. I came across it when reading about professional gamers competing for huge tournament prizes, and kept coming across the term APM; this video shows how fast a professional gamer is when it comes to pounding out keypresses for the win! Javascript Rants (GHD012)
February 14, 2016Read moreI’ve been working on this Javascript project, and with the final trial are coming up on Tuesday we’ve been steadily adding additional features as the researchers think of them. One innocuous request was to add event logging of some kind, redirecting some of our existing monitoring with timestamps, and so I started it today thinking it wouldn’t take too long. I ended up having to clean-up and rewrite quite a bit of code to actually do useful logging that would be helpful to someone who is trying to understand what meaningful interactions happened at what time. I just finished it up at around 345AM, and then remembered OH CRAP I didn’t do any goals-related work today!
I’m wiped, so I am doing the minimum under the goal Sharing Something I Know. It’s worth a 10 point result, and so I am going to yammer on a bit about Javascript and what I think about it, if you were perhaps thinking it might be good to know. Then I am going to go to sleep. (more…)

Making Sleeve Garters (GHD011)
February 12, 2016Read moreI had a bad case of Friday-itis today, and as I looked upon my list of goals felt hugely indifferent to starting any big software projects. I also didn’t feel like expressing myself in anyway, so that ruled out drawing and music. I did remember, though, that I had found a box of 1-inch webbing with assorted buckles; it had been part of a project to fix a problem I had with my favorite day robe, the rare and wondrous Toddland Rich Folks’ Pajama Jacket. Breakfast Blowouts and being Satisfied with Less (GHD010)
February 11, 2016Read moreThursday started at 5AM, having woken up after only a few hours of sleep because I was excited about a couple ideas related to GHDR goals. Since I had been fasting at that point for 32 hours, I was also ready to have breakfast at the nearby [Midfield Cafe][mcafe] at our local regional airport. While it was a great breakfast, the combination of food overload and lack of sleep knocked me out for most of the day! Lesson learned…no more giant breakfasts! I’m amazed at how little food it takes to get through the day, and am more inclined to not eat as much in the future because I felt disgusting all day.
So, the rest of Thursday was one of those “bit of this, bit of that” days. I did some review of my GHDR goals, tweaked a few projects from previous days in the smallest of ways, and did a bit of billable work. Not as seemingly productive as the rest of the week, but I think it was productive ENOUGH. Learning to be satisfied with less (which applies to breakfasts too) is a state of mind I aspire to. (more…)
