This morning’s Gamasutra Newsletter had a couple interesting tidbits:

The Game Audio Network Guild is a non-profit organization that was “established to educate the masses in regards to interactive audio”. They announced their 3rd annual award winners for 2005 at this year’s Game Developer Conference, which wrapped a couple weeks ago. What’s interesting about the list is the number of high quality entrants there were. Game audio is phenomenal these days, if you haven’t been paying attention. 5.1 channel surround sound, baby…no boops and beeps here. Witness instead the terror of WW II soundscapes! Bop to original pop songs and live musical performance! The biz has come a long way since the SID chip and FM synthesis.

This year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (or E3, as we like to say) has apparently sold out its exhibit space in a 5-year record time. So this promises to be a huge show:

540,000 net square feet of exhibit space has been sold, covering five exhibit halls, making it the largest expo since 2000 – at the outset of this current generation of consoles. Further details of the next generation of consoles are likely set to be debuted at this year’s expo, with new information from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo all promised in some form, with the next-generation Xbox extremely likely to get a full unveiling.

    Ooooo.

  • Speaking of Authentic Chinese Restaurants…

    March 24, 2005

I happened upon this list of authentic Chinese restaurants at areyoueye.com. Unfortunately, I can’t read it to tell what kind of site it is, but the list is gold! There appear to be lots of photos of food though.

  • Busy Busy

    March 23, 2005

I’m having a pretty busy couple of weeks, so my blog posting will be diminished from its usual. Go re-read the chinese food excursion post a few more times; there’s enough text in there for a whole week’s worth of reading :-)

No? Well, here’s what I’m up to:

    • Debugging an interesting-but-elusive data loss problem between a Flash AS 2.0 client and a back-end server. We haven’t been able to reproduce the error; neither has QA been able to.
    • Other bug testing, preparing for an End of March delivery.

    • Taxes

p>Hopefully things will be back to normal in April.

  • Chinese Food Excursion, Part I

    Authentic...Yum!

    DaveE writes:

Have you ever thought of assembling a group for a road trip & guided tour of various menu items? Most people like myself go to the Upscale Chinese American places, see some interesting dishes, but always default back to the same tired list of 3-4 regular choices.

Good idea Dave! I’m actually working with Barry on a side project to do something about this, but we’re in the way-early stages. In the meantime, let’s lay some groundwork. While my own background in things Chinese is rather Chinese-American (and therefore of suspect authenticity), perhaps this rough guide will prove useful.

    Vie

    Part 1

One cool thing about being freelance is that you get to pick projects that you want to work on. You don’t necessarily maximize your profits, but working with passionate people is far more enriching. Jeff Borkowski is one of those passionate people; helping him get the Scintus Images website off the ground was meaningful, and I gained a treasured friend in the process. While I only helped with cutting the initial Dreamweaver templates, it was quite inspiring to observe Jeff design and build the guts of his business from the ground up. An accomplished printmaker and photographer himself, Jeff’s making his play to create an organization that supports the art community in a way that’s good for his soul and for his fellow artists. Good for him, good for us.

The big idea: Develop a high-quality, digital reproduction process through meticulous proofing and qualifying of dozens of vendors. Find great artists who are looking to sell fine art editions to more middle markets and designers, but aren’t particularly interested in handling the tedium of promition, business, and fulfillment over the Internet. In the middle, put a guy who groks both sides, someone they trust to be as conscientious about quality and presentation as they are. That’s my read on it…you can get the straight dope from the website.

    Part 2

The cool thing about having a blog is that you get to promote whatever the hell you want, so I’m happy to mention about Scintus’ upcoming gallery event in the South End.

Scintus Images: Selections running April 1-30

Opening Reception April 1st, 5:30-830PM Locco Ritoro Gallery 450 Harrison, Storefront 37 Boston, MA 02118 SoWa Art District / Gallery Row

I’m pleased and excited to see it all come together…it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. From what I gather, everyone in the world is invited, so go check out Jeff’s site to learn about the artists and his mission. Then mark April 1st on your calendar (no joke!) and plan on visiting Locco Ritoro.
