Eccentris – Sacha Dean Biyan
July 14, 2005Stumbled across Eccentris, the slick website of photographer Sacha Dean Biyan. It was a winner in the 2003 CommArts Interactive Annual…commericial fashion photography fused with kickass realtime motion graphics programming in Flash. It’s one of the first sites I’ve seen that handles sound really well. The source material has been well-produced, and the programmatic (I’m guessing here) crossfading between beat-sync’d soundtracks as sections load in the background…really slick. And almost every transition is unexpected, with a spot-on sense of timing and motion. I almost wept. :-) Playing “Follow the Talent”, I looked up the programmer Josh Ott to see what else he’s worked on. He’s listed on the Freedom Interactive Design website as a VP of Design and Development. The Freedom Interactive site is pretty sweet too, very playful. Worth checking out.Read more - July 13, 2005
Thoughts on Flash Projector Tools
July 13, 2005Read moreI was excited to see that FlashMagazine has a review of 6 popular projector tools. I have the occassional need to create a full-screen projector, and I’ve always found the process slightly irritating, at least with the older versions the tools. Why? Because the extra commands are not available within the authoring environment; they require that you output a .SWF file that is then processed with the projector-maker tool to create the .EXE. And, most of them (with the exception of mProjector) require callbacks or polling functions to tell when the command has actually executed. This makes for aggravating code development.

Finding Good Food
July 13, 2005Read moreSome friends sent me some interesting food-related resources:
- From Diane comes this article on the world’s top 50 restaurants, as ranked by Brittish magazine Restaurant.
From Cara, via Jeff, comes Roadfood
Great regional meals along highways, in small towns and in city neighborhoods. It is sleeves-up food made by cooks, bakers, pitmasters, and sandwich-makers who are America’s culinary folk artists
I’ve been crawling through The Phantom Gourmet, which is a restaurant review organization that covers the New England region. They even have a local TV show now. The web site is growing; while it’s far from comprehensive, it’s definitely becoming a Force for Good (Eating) in my neck of the woods.

More Fish Market
July 12, 2005Read moreI was just looking at the SouthWest Fisheries Office, and there’s a Tokyo Fish Market Report, showing how many fish were sold, the price, and the source. The listing looks something like this:
BLUEFIN TUNA, fresh 06/21 1 fish Boston 2,200 06/23 3 fish Italy 8,500-5,400-2,300 06/15 2 fish Malta 3,000 06/23 10 fish Mexico 1,900-1,587-1,500 06/23 8 fish Spain 4,900-3,075-2,200
The report reads like a yummy sushi menu, and now I know what I’m having for lunch :-)

Stalking the Wily Lobster Dinner
July 12, 2005Read moreMy sister was mentioning that she was going out to get lobster one night, but it was too pricey so they passed it up. “The prices fluctuate daily”, she said. This got me wondering if there was a resource that actually tracked or posted daily fish market prices so one could pick the opportune moment of going out for lobster. Sort of a Priceline for seafood, maybe.
As it turns out, there’s the NOAA Fisheries Office of Science and Technology, which publishes a daily market price report. So you can visit this site everyday (except Wednesday) to make your next visit to Lobster Shack easier on the wallet.
The Office of Science Technology is a branch of yet another umbrella agency in support of our fabulous American lifestyle: The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Adminstration, the kinder-and-gentler brainchild of Richard M. Nixon. I’ve never heard of NOAA until now, but it looks like a comprehensive science agency, way more integrated into daily life than NASA.From providing timely and precise weather, water and climate forecasts, to monitoring the environment, to managing fisheries and building healthy coastlines, to making our nation more competitive through safe navigation and examining changes in the oceans, NOAA is on the front lines for America.
America! F-Yeah!
