Drawing Night
August 22, 2005A few weeks ago we had a Drawing Night at a friend’s new house. A lot of us hadn’t really drawn anything in quite some time, so it was decreed that we should get together and make this happen. I drew the spaceships in the lowerRead morerightleft…the first one was a rough pass, the second one tried to fix the proportional issues. We relived our first drawing memories: Colonial Vipers, Garfield, Smurfs and the Gatchaman Phoenix. We listened to a lot of tunes and ate things that were either deep-fried or covered with mozzarella cheese. Can’t wait to do it again! - August 21, 2005
Actionscript Bootcamp: The Final Week
August 21, 2005Read moreJason is going to finish up what he’s got going this week. It’s going to be quite a challenge…he’s dealing with new concepts like event-driven programming, object-oriented design, time-based simulation, and just learning how to pull it all together. Very exciting, though it is an awful lot to absorb in a short time. What I hope he takes away from this is the basic Flash Actionscripting environment, some sense of how to write code in this environment, and just get going in some of these concepts. If he can get a solid, working, debugged screen-based interactive workflow, some time-based animation, and some kind of event-managed application architecture, I think he’ll be in good shape for further pursuit. We may do this again next year, since we seem to be having a good time with it. Perhaps I will expand the program.
Next week, we will be doing our formal review of the entire two-month process. The first month was design, which he did in Chicago. The second month was implementation, here in Nashua. I’m going to ask him to fill out some formal evaluation forms of what he thought about the material, the style of presentation, and what else he might have found useful.

Is Your Boss a Psychopath?
August 19, 2005Read moreBarry just forwarded this quiz to me:
The standard clinical test for psychopathy, Robert Hare’s PCL-R, evaluates 20 personality traits overall, but a subset of eight traits defines what he calls the “corporate psychopath” — the nonviolent person prone to the “selfish, callous, and remorseless use of others.” Does your boss fit the profile?
He said that he hypothetically scored me as a “0”, which on this metric is good. Just the sort of thing my inner-psychopath likes to hear…Yessss…the facade is working! Soon, the world will bow before me and tremble! Mua ha ha!
Happy Friday! :-)

Litany Against Fear
August 19, 2005Read moreI just stumbled upon this again, The Bene Gesserit Litany Against Fear, from one of my favorite books of all-time, Dune.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Next Gen Intel, Reason for Apple Switch?
August 19, 2005Read moreAs we found out at the last Apple World Wide Developers Conference, the Mac is turning Intel. More interesting is that the reason may not be so much current economics, but future Intel processors. From this interesting speculative article on the Inquirer:
According to the Apple announcement, the reason it is switching is “performance per watt”. Steve Jobs showed a graph with PowerPC projected at 15 computation units per watts and Intel’s projected at 70 units per watt. Intel must have figured out a way to reduce power consumption 4 fold. How? […]
We’ll find out what’s in store for the next Intel processors at the Intel Developer’s Conference this August 23rd in San Francisco. The rumors that the OS-X running considerably faster on hacked Intel boxes than PowerPC is exciting. If MacOS X is not a wallowing pig on Intel, pass me the Kool-Aid! I’ll be switching!
