  • The Printable CEO for PocketMod Hack

    October 19, 2005

I was feeling rather good about the current state of The Printable CEO until I read the following comment from Darren Oakley:

It would be even cooler to have a pocketmod version – I know you have the minibooklet, but that means we sacrifice all the other pocketmod goodness…

Sacrifice goodness?!? We can’t have that!!! So I created new pdfs that would be more friendly with mixed PocketMod content.

  • BMW Mobile Tradition

    October 19, 2005

Visit BMW Mobile Tradition Site I was getting some work done on my car at the local VW dealership–they have a really excellent service department–and when it came time to pay up I actually had to walk to the BMW showroom cashier. While I was waiting, I spied the 2005 BMW Mobile Tradition Catalog and flipped through it. It’s stuffed with pictures of classic BMW cars and history. For example, the BMW Isetta “Bubble Car” (celebrating its 50th year anniversary) is described as follows:
The BMW Isetta was the most successful microcar in the 1950s after the Glas Goggomobile. There were both rational and emotional reasons for this success. The vehicle design was practical and the price of DM 2,750 set it apart from the competition. Low consumption and versatility even put it ahead of the more powerful Volkswagen. The spirit of the car was expressed in its inimitable shape, and it was affectionately known as “Bubble Car” or “Rolling Egg”. The BMW Isetta became part of the in-scene, being purchased by a string of celebrities including Cary Grant, Curd Jürgens and Stirling Moss.

I want one! But alas, the pragmatic side of me says that it would be a death trap on the wintery New England highways. But…I can buy a little piece of history through the catalog!

1019-isettacamper.jpgLike this “BMW Isetta mit Campinganhänger”…

1019-isetta.jpgor this small toy “BMW Isetta Export”…

1019-isettawatch.jpgor this awesome “BMW Isetta Speedometer Watch”, “a high-quality cover made of natural crystal glass and a case designed in nickel-free stainless steel. The ingenious container watchcase allows the watch to be transformed from a sporty wristwatch into a classic fob watch. The watch is shockproof and waterproof up to 4 bar.”

The Isetta isn’t the only car covered either…it’s a good browse. Here are some direct links that may work: BMW Mobile Tradition Website and the 2005 Katalog in PDF Format.

The BMW site subpages are rather hard to direct-link, so if these links are broken just use their search and look for “mobile tradition”, then browse to “publications” then to “accesories” to download their catalog. I’ll have to go back and see if I can score a printed version for the library. The other BMW historical publications, I’m told, are well worth looking into if you are a classic car enthusiast.

  • “The Passion of the Clerks” Video Journal

    October 17, 2005

Visit Clerks 2 SiteKevin Smith, the king of indie movie makers, is making a new movie based around his 1994 cult-classic Clerks. Production on Clerks 2: The Passion of the Clerks kicked off recently, and there’s a neat vj to chronicle every step of the way! This promises to be an interesting behind-the-scenes look at the movie-making process, particularly if you’re a fan of Kevin Smith’s past work like me; he built a delightfully vulgar movie ‘n comics operation from scratch, and he gets to make the kinds of films that he wants to make. That’s awesome. If Uncle Kevin can do it, what’s stopping you?

Visit Silent Bob's DiaryBe warned, should you be tempted to click on the QT movies, that they are NOT SAFE FOR WORK, unless lots and lots of graphic swearing is normal where you work!

  • Mystery ? Del.icio.us Warning

    October 17, 2005

I just noticed that WordPress defaults to using a right-angle quote (the raquo; entity) as the separator, which seems to be the cause of all those broken del.icio.us links that say del.icio.us warning: non-utf8 string! (sorry)

    Geeky tech notes follow:

  • A Quick Tour of Visual Studio

    October 15, 2005

1015-vcs-title.jpg I catching up with Peter, who among other things teaches an Introduction to Visual Basic at Endicott College. I commented, as I do every time we meet, that I should really look into VB because there’s actually quite a lot of work being done in this environment. There are a lot of “real applications” are being done in VB. I’m not sure if there are more than for Flash; a quick visit to Monster.Com showed a 3:1 demand for VB coders versus Flashers, at least here in my neck of the woods.

Warming further to the subject, Peter showed me how to create a skeleton application in Visual Basic .NET. The entire intro took about 10 minutes, more or less. The amazing thing is that this is all I needed to get enough of a grasp of the environment to know what to do next. I imagine that any experienced Actionscript coder could pick it up and start screwing around.

    Warning! Geeky notes follow!
