Emergent Task Planner 2007 Discussion
January 4, 2007Read moreWow, Lifehackered Again! I am getting to know my host, FutureQuest.Net under situations that would normally be bad, but again I’m super impressed with their proactiveness and willingness to work with me to keep the shared server stable. They are one of the few hosts that I found that no one ever seems to badmouth. They are pricier than others for what you get in terms of disk space and bandwidth, but it’s good to know they are actually keeping tabs on things.
But I digress. Put any comments related to the Emergent Task Planner 2007 updates here, as the current page is being redirected to a static web page to try to keep the load down. Thanks for your interest!

Two Quick Updates
January 3, 2007Read moreI’ve made some updates to older posts:
For Hipster users, I’ve made 1-UP and Avery-compatible 3-UP of the Concrete Goals Tracker form.
Also, there are several new locales available for the 2007 Compact Calendar, so if your language wasn’t there the first time, it might be there now. Check it out.

Creating New Year’s Resolutions with the Concrete Goals Tracker
January 3, 2007Read moreI haven’t yet had a chance to review the progress on last year’s resolutions in depth, but I can see that I didn’t make as much progress on them as I would have hoped. Or did I?
As I was updating the Concrete Goals Tracker on Jan 1st, it occured to me that this was the very tool I could use for tracking my progress toward my new resolutions throughout the entire year. I just needed to create a new weighted list of goals.
I haven’t formally described the process before, so here is my attempt to systemize it for general use. Even if you don’t find the Concrete Goals Tracker useful in your day-to-day, you might find the way I achieve clarity in my goal setting interesting.
Oh, and I should mention that once everything is set up, it’s supposed to be really easy to use. Do the hard work up front to achieve clarity first, so you can take it easy later :-)

Emergent Task Planner 2007 Updates
January 2, 2007Read moreA few people are using the experimental Emergent Task Planner sheets, so I’ve updated them for 2007 and added a B&W version.
So what is Emergent Task Planning? It’s a more directed version of Emergent Task Tracking, which is the form that helps you figure out where your time is disappearing to. Emergent Task Planning, on the other hand, attempts to guide your effort for the day by using time boxing:
- list the things you need to do for the day
- estimate how long they’ll take (up to 4 hours…if it’s longer, break it up)
- figure out where in the day you’ll do them
- block out the time, and stick to the schedule
Think of it as a quickie day planning sheet.
You can read more about the design, or just download the forms below if you already know what you want to do with them.
UPDATE: I keep forgetting that the ETP grew out of another form, the Menu of the Day. If you’re curious about the schedule grid and the ABCDE markers, read about it here. Hint: A = 4 hours.

Hipster-compatible Concrete Goals Tracker
January 1, 2007Read moreBrand new for 2007, index card versions of the Concrete Goals Tracker. These might be useful for Hipster PDA users who are getting ready for the new year. In any case, I just felt like making them :-)
These are for 3×5 cards, and are laid out 4 to a page. As you can see in the picture, I had to split the goal list from the tracking form.
Oh, and yes…there’s an editable version. Just use Acrobat Reader’s “Text Edit” tool (next to the hand icon on the toolbar). You may want to click the box that says “Show interactive fields” as well.
