Testers Wanted for Smaller Emergent Task Planner Design
November 9, 2010Read more
There are two new form factors for the Emergent Task Planner: half-size A5 and quarter-size A6. I actually accidentally made the A6 version first, having read the wrong line of the ISO 216 paper size table, and was wondering why it looked so small…oops!
I don’t use this size at all, so I’m wondering if anyone out there would like to give me early feedback on the design. I suspect some things might be too small, and people with binders may need additional space on the left-hand side for hole punching. So if you’ve got a desire to test, leave a comment here or shoot me an email via the contact form, and I’ll
send you a fresh PDF to download fromsend you an invite to the the super-secret Design Prototyping Area (in Basecamp), where you can download the PDF and participate in the design discussion. For North American users, I’d be interested in hearing what smaller paper sizes are most useful to you.
Thanks for anyone who can spare some time!
UPDATE NOV 24, 2010: Testing is closed. We should have a new version of the A5 and US Memo (5.5×8.5″) up soon.

Seeking Resistance
November 8, 2010Read moreI’ve been holed up in my basement doing some custom WordPress theme modification for the past couple of weeks, which was somewhat outside my comfort zone. “I’m not a developer,” I said, “You probably should find someone who specializes in PHP and WordPress theming.” But apparently my overzealous approach to documenting what I am doing was, for once, appreciated, and now I’m up to my eyeballs in weird data structures and APIs. I didn’t expect to enjoy it, and for a while I didn’t, but looking back on this I’ve had a few realizations about the hard work of pushing forward that I’d almost forgotten. (more…)

Do You Need a Logo? Maybe Not!
October 29, 2010Read moreJohn McWade, the publisher of Before and After Magazine, recently posted this video analysis of a logo for a pet sitter. It epitomizes why I recommend his books to everyone starting out in design.

Photo Gallery Plugins and Mint
October 21, 2010Read moreI had an issue with my design website: FancyBox was broken on FireFox and Internet Explorer. It worked fine on Chrome, my daily browser. It turned out there was a conflict with the venerable Download Counter plugin for real-time web analytics package Mint running on the main domain. Download Counter rewrites the anchor HREF to redirect through a PHP script, which breaks Fancybox’s (and prettyPhoto’s) attempts to load the image. Quickie solution: configure Download Counter to ignore image files. Then cuss a lot until you feel better :-) I used Firefox’s “inspect element” command, which revealed the otherwise-invisible HREF voodoo.
