  • Four Stages of Logo Design

    May 10, 2011

"Logo Sketches" I’m having a pretty good day. I have my checklists from yesterday (which I’ll post soon) and this got me through the morning with less fuss than usual. So I’m feeling ready to take on the first order of business for the day: design a logo. Yeah!

Oh wait, I’m stuck. I feel the resistances pile on. I haven’t even grabbed a notebook or popped Freehand up on my screen, and I’m already feeling half-defeated.

In times like these, it’s useful to remember the process, and since I’m being mindful of writing things down this week I’m going to say there are four stages of logo design that I go through.

    • Stage 1. I don’t know how it’s going to come out. It might suck.
    • Stage 2. Ok, THIS doesn’t suck so much. It could be BETTER, though.
    • Stage 3. Ok, that is getting somewhere. But it doesn’t really SING to me.
    • Stage 4. That’s not bad. But it’s MISSING something.

This post got LONG, and there’s more examples I’d like to add, so I’ve moved it to my upcoming reference area if you’re curious: Four Stages of Logo Design is the only way you can currently see it.

    May 9, 2011

After a stormy couple of weeks, weathering unexpected projects in domains I don’t usually travel, I’m feeling back to normal. It feels like I’ve been on a kind of Anti-Vacation, where you get to experience new and exciting levels of pressure that you’ve read about in books but never had planned to visit yourself. In my case, it was a return trip to the LAND OF WORDPRESS SECURITY on behalf of a friend-client; a malware warning had been reported by one of her website’s readers, which can be an ominous precursor to a flagging by the almighty Google itself through its “Safe Browsing” service. That would be bad for the site, so I spent about 30 hours over a weekend scanning, cleaning, and restoring the WordPress install while throwing myself through “bash shell bootcamp”. It was quite draining (I’m old) and it’s taken me over a week to recover from the shock to my schedule.

  • GHDR Review 3: New MMAs and the Need for Marketing

    May 5, 2011

It is time for the third Groundhog Day Resolutions Review of the year. Last month, I actually set a measurable goal: add more “money making activities” (MMAs) to my project list. By that, I meant putting my focus on developing products I could sell. Why? I’d like to achieve financial independence through the dint of my own effort. It doesn’t have to be a LOT of money, either…just enough to be sufficient in food, shelter, and creating a buffer of savings. What this will buy me, I think, is the time to pursue the next phase of larger personal projects.

So how did I do? (more…)

  • Contemplating an ETP Hardcover Journal

    May 3, 2011

I’ve been using my beloved Cachet Classic Graphic 9×12 Sketchbook a lot, and found myself wishing that it had some pre-printed ETP grids in it just now. I then thought…why not make them? I certainly would like one. During the next print run, I might have to arrange for a few custom ones to be made. I wonder if anyone else would be interested in one.

  • The “ETP Pads in Europe” Survey

    May 2, 2011

If you didn’t see last week’s post about it, I’m evaluating the feasibility of producing and stocking nice printed versions of the Emergent Task Planner in Europe with an associate of mine. If you are interested in purchasing one, register with this survey form so we can see if we can afford to do a print run in the UK. Thanks!
