Visit SiteLordy lordy, my copy of World of Warcraft has arrived.

If you’ve been living under a rock, World of Warcraft is the Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (or MMORPG) that was launched by Blizzard Entertainment late last November. As of now, it’s got something like 1.5 million players worldwide, handily crushing its competitors.

I got to play in the early alpha test almost a year before launch, so I figured I would stay burned out on it. But no…it still beckons! I kind of miss beating up Murlocs and Troggs. I never hit level 60 either, content to travel the world to gape at the landscape, which is stunningly-well art directed.

Part of the renewed draw is that a few of my friends are playing, and it will be fun to hang out with them again, virtually, in a kick-ass fantasy setting. The tough part will be picking a server! Plus, it’s actually a pretty cheap hobby, monetarily speaking. As a time sink, it’s unspeakably evil. We’ll just have to see how it goes.

Oh, and kudos to Blizzard for including a real manual. It’s a perfect-bound book, just like the old days! It’s a little small so it fits in the box, but still…awesome.

    March 25, 2005

Visit Site This is awesome…take a picture of what’s behind your laptop screen, and use it as your background image. It looks like your computer screen is transparent…oh, this is such a cool idea.

Via BoingBoing, which got it from Waxy.

  • Game Industry Quickies

    March 24, 2005

This morning’s Gamasutra Newsletter had a couple interesting tidbits:

The Game Audio Network Guild is a non-profit organization that was “established to educate the masses in regards to interactive audio”. They announced their 3rd annual award winners for 2005 at this year’s Game Developer Conference, which wrapped a couple weeks ago. What’s interesting about the list is the number of high quality entrants there were. Game audio is phenomenal these days, if you haven’t been paying attention. 5.1 channel surround sound, baby…no boops and beeps here. Witness instead the terror of WW II soundscapes! Bop to original pop songs and live musical performance! The biz has come a long way since the SID chip and FM synthesis.

This year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (or E3, as we like to say) has apparently sold out its exhibit space in a 5-year record time. So this promises to be a huge show:

540,000 net square feet of exhibit space has been sold, covering five exhibit halls, making it the largest expo since 2000 – at the outset of this current generation of consoles. Further details of the next generation of consoles are likely set to be debuted at this year’s expo, with new information from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo all promised in some form, with the next-generation Xbox extremely likely to get a full unveiling.

    Ooooo.

  • Speaking of Authentic Chinese Restaurants…

    March 24, 2005

I happened upon this list of authentic Chinese restaurants at areyoueye.com. Unfortunately, I can’t read it to tell what kind of site it is, but the list is gold! There appear to be lots of photos of food though.

  • Busy Busy

    March 23, 2005

I’m having a pretty busy couple of weeks, so my blog posting will be diminished from its usual. Go re-read the chinese food excursion post a few more times; there’s enough text in there for a whole week’s worth of reading :-)

No? Well, here’s what I’m up to:

    • Debugging an interesting-but-elusive data loss problem between a Flash AS 2.0 client and a back-end server. We haven’t been able to reproduce the error; neither has QA been able to.
    • Other bug testing, preparing for an End of March delivery.

    • Taxes
