  • Curry House

    June 16, 2005

Outside the restaurantHouse Foods is a Japanese company that makes Instant Curry. I love instant curry mix. I found out that House has showcase restaurants on the West Coast. On a recent visit, I roped in my friend Mark to take me to one near his house in Irvine.

I want curry now! The restaurant was manned by what appeared to be actual Japanese managers from the mother company. We were seated quickly, and with growing excitement I took in the decor: unassuming formica tables, fake plants…just what I would have expected from a non-nonsense curry establishment. I explained to Mark that this was no ordinary curry house…it was THE House of Curry. He was suitably impressed, having had no idea prior to this.

Mark's DishI ordered plain Chicken Curry, just like I make it from the mix. I wanted to know what it was supposed to taste like, and see if I perhaps was not doing it right. To my relief, it tasted exactly right. Mark, on the other hand, got some kind of Hamburger Katsu Curry: breaded hamburger patty, deep fried, with curry sauce poured on top. Looked and tasted good. They had all kinds of other dishes…I think I brought a menu home with me, so I can get an idea of what else I can try making.

Curry Pan is deep fried with Curry Inside! We got some Curry Pan to go. They’re kind of like a jelly donut in construction, except deep fried and filled with pipin’ hot curry. So, so good.

  • Tom Judd’s “Everyday”

    June 15, 2005

Visit Site Jeff forwarded me this link to Tom Judd’s Everyday, which is an online journal of sorts. From the website:
I PRODUCE A PAGE EVERYDAY WHICH I THEN SCAN AND UPLOAD TO THIS VERY SITE. THE PAGES CONTAIN OBSERVATIONAL DRAWINGS FROM MY DAY, FICTIONAL CHARACTERS STRAIGHT FROM MY BRAIN, QUOTES THAT I HEAR AND THINGS THAT HAPPEN.

If you enjoy this kind of raw daily artistic process, you will dig this site. Awesome.

  • Javascript to Flash Communication

    June 14, 2005

Ben and I have been looking into solving a workaround for I18N text input, using a Flash to an HTML form. Why? Because browsers have support for RTL language input. Flash MX 2004 does not. So the idea is to let the browser do the input and then somehow suck the data back into the Flash App, where it can massage the text into a semblence of a correct appearance. A big round trip from Flash to Javascript back to Flash…interesting, yes?

Visit Site My [sister] invited me to go to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts to see Keren Ann. The headliner was Juana Molina, who was someone she’d heard of but never seen. First time, we noted, that we’d ever been to a concert together!

  • “He’s Just Not That Into You”

    June 13, 2005

One of my female friends has been going through an “extended pre-courtship ritual”, for lack of a better description, with one rugged fellow she’s met. Lately, though, things have seemed to stall…what’s up with that? Flirting: check! Meaningful conversation: check! But where’s the followup? So far, she’s seen zero action on his part, and frankly she’s getting tired of waiting.

So we’ve been chatting about the causes of this irritating lack of manly initiative on the dude’s part. As a guy, I had some theories about this embarassing lapse of action by “my team”…maybe he’s intimidated? Maybe he’s just a boy and doesn’t know what to do? Interesting to theorize about, but wasn’t getting my friend anywhere.

A couple weeks pass, and my friend mentions a book by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo called He’s Just Not That Into You: “The No Excuses Truth to Understanding Guys”. My assignment: read it and report whether it was full of crap or not; when I mentioned this to the help desk women at Barnes and Noble, they nodded in recognition and grimly led me to its resting place in the “relationships” section.
