Creative Retreat North: The Pics
February 28, 2006Read moreI spent the weekend in Waterville, Maine for Creative Retreat North. This is a somewhat-annual event that illustrator Brad Fitzpatrick holds at his home; it’s basically an excuse for friends to come up and hang out. This year it was Brad, Duncan and me. We all used to work at ActiveEdge, so it was great to see everyone together again.
Of course, what was even more important was getting to eat this:
Anyway, the idea of the Creativabe Retreat is to catch up on what we’ve been doing. We’re all in the same general industry, plotting our plots and scheming schemes, so it’s good to get together and share what we’ve learned over the past year. CRN 2006 did not disappoint; I came away with tons of great ideas and a renewed sense of mission.
I’ll write about the ideas later; first I’ll just get the pictures out of the way.

On Choosing to Go Slower
February 23, 2006Read moreOutta the blue, I get a pointer on slowing down, written for the stressed-out members of the American Bar Association. The article notes, among other things, how the European lifestyle (with their 6 weeks of paid vacation) doesn’t seem to make them any less productive. Food for thought.

On Choosing Flexibility
February 23, 2006Read moreAn online buddy forwarded me Cameron Moll’s decision not to work for Apple. I sometimes wonder about my past decisions in the game industry, having chosen flexibility and philosophy over commercial success. Am I dumb? It’s reassuring to read someone else’s take on the same situation, plus I love the microtexture of his site.

Hair Styling meets Team Leadership
February 23, 2006Read moreLast February 14th, I was at the En Vogue Salon getting my regular hair cut. The owner, Kim, commented that I’d made considerable progress in my personal grooming and attitude since I had first started coming there. There was, however, one skill that continued to elude me: the stylish hair muss. I finally figured it out, and I realized that there was a lesson about team leadership somewhere in there too.
Crazy? Read on.
