My SXSWi 2006 Cheat Sheet
March 6, 2006Read moreI’m something of an obsessive traveller; when I visit a new place, I tend to research and gather information that gives me a general sense of where things are relative to each other. Compounding this trip are the many interesting panels I want to attend. I just started looking at them for the first time, and quickly started to get overwhelmed. Because I’m a complete dork, I spent a couple hours copying and pasting all the information into a Word document so I could browse the panels my leisure instead of clicking all over the Internet. Much more usable in the bathtub, where I shall be soaking in a few moments.
I know, I know. I could have just downloaded the PDA version, assuming I find my PDA before Friday. There’s something I like, however, about a sturdy printout. Especially since my wonderful new printer handles two-sided printing quickly and automatically.
Dave’s Scarily Obsessive and Perhaps Ultimately Useless SXSW Cheat Sheet
- A 42 page PDF (with clickable links) listing all the panels and the “official” parties by day, copied and pasted with love.
A single page PDF (with clickable links) that just lists all the panel events. I’m using this to circle stuff.

p>Kartooner and I are going to be driving around Austin together, and we want to know where everything is, so I’ll probably update this page a bit more with the pertinent info. Dude, bookmark this page!

Watch Brad Draw a Horse
March 6, 2006Read moreIllustrator buddy Brad has uploaded a horse on paper. It just takes him a couple minutes, and it’s fascinating to watch. First there’s a piece of paper, then there are some lines, and then suddenly there’s a horse head smirking at you. Amazing.
Of course, it’s entirely possible that Brad was drawing from the photo reference, shown here. I wonder if that makes it easier? :-)

Stage 2 Productivity
March 5, 2006Read moreIt seems that every few months, I hit a kind of productivity crisis and quietly freak out. Don’t get me wrong, in generally I have been feeling pretty positive. The Printable CEO did a good job of getting me focused enough a few months ago so I feel I’ve been making good progress, and therefore haven’t been using it so much. This is the first time since then that I’ve realized a different kind of unease has built up regarding the other bad habits I have.
My Biggest Problems, In No Particular Order
- Distraction by New Ideas
- Doing Bills in a Timely Manner
- Doing Household Chores
- Daily, Regular Routine
- Juggling Multiple Projects
- Exercise & Health
- Moving Forward in Targeted Fashion
- Developing Business Procedures
Looking at this list, the main themese are chores, distractions, and pursuing specific goals. I can break them down as follows:
Chores: doing bills, household, regular routine, exercise & health.
Distractions: new ideas.
Pursuit of specific goals: Moving forward in targeted fashion, developing business procedures.
In hindsight, my very first Printable CEO form emphasized what I think is Stage 1 for the development of my personal productivity: how to recognize what tasks are most fruitful. Having practiced that for six months, I’ve gained momentum and energy! So now I have a new problem, which is about focus and strategy. Maybe not surprisingly, there is some correlation with the development of small business (as I’ve experience it, anyway).
Of course, it’s entirely possible that Brad was drawing from the photo reference, shown here. I wonder if that makes it easier? :-)
