Nipping Democracy in the Bud
March 29, 2006Read moreAn American Idol-style cable show in China raises alarm bells in the government, which moves swiftly to introduce rules that prevent shows like it from being too popular. Supergirl is a show from a rural cable TV station, and its popularity challenges the dominancy of China Central Television. The show, in addition to promoting a new “sour yogurt drink”, promotes rebelious attitudes with bellies showing and spiky haircuts! And most unsettling to the government: “Supergirl also set a dangerous precedent by introducing Chinese to the concept of voting.” Via AdAge China (free registration required).

Rabbit Rabbit
March 28, 2006Read moreA friend of mine just told me about a superstitious custom where, on the first of the month, the first thing you say is “Rabbit Rabbit” to bring you luck. I thought she had made it up, but Lo! There is an article regarding the custom on Wikipedia! I love these kinds of mysterious customs, especially the lucky ones. The problem is: now I want to say “rabbit rabbit” all the time. I can imagine my sis and I rabbit rabbiting at each other all day long, if we’d known about this when we were kids.

An RSS Milestone
March 28, 2006Read moreBetter Living Through New Media hit the 1000 RSS subscriber mark on Monday March 27, 2006! Yay! Thanks to everyone who has subscribed and stayed on, for whatever reason :-)
I think I will buy a nice bottle of Scotch to celebrate, but only if it stays at this level for more than a week…could be a fluke!

Five Things On My Mind
March 27, 2006Read moreI am putting myself into “hermit mode” again, which consists of following this schedule:
- In the daytime, do social / communication / email things for about eight hours.
- Sleep for four hours, wake up at around midnight.
- Do project work in the dead of the night, for about eight hours, music blaring
- Sleep for four hours, wake up around noon.
It’s a crazy schedule, but I find that in times when I need to be productive, separating “project time” from “social time” with a nice chunk of sleep seems to help. Working when everyone else is asleep also cuts down on distractions.
Another way of putting it: I’m extroverted during the day, and introverted at night. It’s not great when I have client meetings, but lately I haven’t had too many of those, so this week I’m entering the Hermit Zone.
