Concrete Goal Tracking for the Non-Freelancer
August 26, 2006Read moreLast week I asked if anyone wanted to share how they were adapting the Concrete Goals Tracker, AKA the “Original Printable CEO”, for their own use.
Zoarazul is the first person to mail in a report; she’s written a nice blog post about her experiences with not only the PCEO, but other systems she’s using as well. She’s got two lists, one for her job in media management, and one for home. She writes:
It took several attempts to come up with my final lists — finding the happy space between “too generic” and “too specific” took some time to figure out, especially with the work version.
Check out her post to see the actual lists. Thanks Zoar for writing about it!
I know there are a few more people who’ve written up their lists in the past…I’ll see if I can gather a set of links in one place so we can all have a look at ’em and hunt for patterns. I’ve been curious to see what’s been working and what hasn’t, as the 1-yr anniversary of the first release is coming up fast. It would be cool to get a sense of how well it’s worked for people, and what hasn’t worked.

From “Unit Productivity” to Process
August 24, 2006Read moreFor the past few months I’ve been feeling a peculiar mixture of elation and disquiet.
- My elation stems from an increase in social networking; I’ve been meeting, emailing, and chatting with fascinating new people on a nearly daily basis. As a result, I’m starting to get some inquiries about project work from people who I’d really love to work for. And I’m also finding that whereas this used to drain me, it now energizes me. Out of curiosity I retook the MBTI (actually, it was the very similar OkCupid version) to see if my personality had shifted…not surprisingly, I am scoring more E than I for the first time ever. WEIRD.
My disquiet is due to the fallout from my increased networking: more projects, commitments, and work than I am used to handling. Thanks to the vestiges of the GTD system I put in place, I can at least track everything I need to do, but what’s missing is the ability to accurately predict my time availability for projects. Compounding the problem is my weird schedule and continuing insomnia; I feel I’m wasting a lot of time trying to stay in sync, and my energy levels vary in ways that are not predictable.
I have thought that my problem was focus and discipline. Another possibility, which came to me by the way of thinking about what it means to really start a business, is that it’s the lack of organization-level process. (more…)

Bee Story: Part II
August 23, 2006Read moreThe story challenge continues! The idea is to incorporate 9 different elements, suggested by commentors, into a single story. Why? I just wanted to see what would happen. I got the idea from Senia and her Story Tuesdays; I have found them a lot of fun to read, and a nice change of pace from the usual blog reading.
Again, this is rough-draft quality…straight-through writing, no back-edits, over about 1.75 hours by my watch. This installment knocks two more “must have” elements off the list, leaving 5 more to go. At this rate there will likely be 1 or 2 more installments.
Feel free to talk amongst yourselves in the comment area if you want to try to influence the direction of the story, or ask questions, or guess to see what might happen next…

Damascity
August 23, 2006Read moreI have just made up a rule that states: IF I BOOKMARK THREE THINGS FROM A SINGLE SITE IN ONE VISIT, I MUST POST THE LINK. That just happened with Damascity, where I stumbled upon a wonderfully-eclectic collection of links blending design and business with a dash of community. I particularly liked finding the Creative Postcard Club–I love postcards, but never thought of collecting or designing them…I am a frustrated illustrator at heart.
