Web Template Sell Sheet Draft
November 19, 2009Read moreI’ve gotten a basic draft for the sell sheet for the first template, which is based on my friend Angela’s website.
The basic idea is to provide an all-in-one package at a fixed price to very small businesses of one or two people (musicians, for example). I have arbitrarily set it to $75 in this example, and have attempted to list everything that is included in that for customization. There’s some stuff missing, in hindsight: the assumption that the client will provide photography, logo graphics, and text, for one. I can imagine having a slim book full of stuff like this.
There will also be developer documentation, detailing how the template “works” and how to maintain it.
Check out the PDF of this (work-in-progress) file if you’d like to see it in more detail. Discussion, as always, is welcome!

Agenceum Logo Design Drafts 2
November 19, 2009Read moreI spent another couple hours on the logo concept. In Draft 4, I filled in the top and added the mysterious eye for the sake of seeing what it would look like. Kind of cheesy. The vertical hashes mean nothing. Empty design. It’s starting to look like a weird sea creature too!
I worked on the nurturing tree idea, by grabbing some of the old elements and adding a leaf. This I like better, though I’m not sure if “greek column” really is being communicated by the swirl. I may grab some books and research a bunch of ionic-style columns to distill the quintessential shape, but for now I kind of like the way this logo is going. I’m still using Arial Rounded, but it kind of works with this logo. Draft 5 is the first pass. Draft 6 changes some of the curves so they convey a slightly more vibrant feel; the variation between the two swirls makes them a tad more organic (not an obvious copy/paste), and the leaf is slightly curved upwards.
If I can’t think of anything better in the next few days, this will be the logo, and I’ll start picking some color schemes.

Agenceum Logo Design Drafts
November 18, 2009Read moreAs I was working on the template documentation, I realized that I had to actually work on some kind of logo / identify system too. I spent some time at Starbucks sketching out the concept that I had in mind: a column that looks like a tree. The idea of Agenceum is, as it says at the top of this page, “Agency + Lyceum”. A lyceum is a public hall or school, named after Aristotle’s original place of discourse in ancient Athens, so I thought making a column would be a good place to start. The tree aspect references the nurturing nature of Agenceum, and to some respect you can also think of it as a tree of knowledge. Plus, I thought it just might look cool.
You can see in the sketches that I’m trying to make a simplified column out of tree-like elements. The logo should be fairly square, so it works well in a variety of placements. There’s a little bit of perspective implied through use of scale differences.
After sketching for about five minutes, I spent another 2.5 hours drawing and refining shapes in Adobe Illustrator CS4.
Although I’m pretty happy with the progression from the simple sketch to the more finished version, I’m not quite satisfied. The open space in the middle of Draft 03 bugs me because it seems empty and unresolved. Adding leaves, to reference the “tree” idea, may save it. Or I could make the logo more creepy by putting something mysterious like an All Seeing Eye for that “Masonic” vibe. Worst case, I just draw an actual Ionic column top, and be done with it. However, the resulting logo would be pretty literal and not very witty, so I’m going to think on this some more.
The typeface, incidentally, is a placeholder. I want a font something like this, but a little more vintage in feel, like the block style used in the late 1800s. The placeholder font is Arial Rounded, if you’re curious. It just needs a little more presence and interestingness.

Investigating Google AdWords
November 17, 2009Read moreI got a free promotional code for a $100 credit from Google AdWords, the search engine advertising service that lists advertising links on the right side of your Google searches. The code I received expires at the end of November, so I decided to sign up and give it a try for a friend’s photo business; this would be useful experience to help me understand how a pay-per-click advertising model works.
It’s not quite free; there’s a $5 balance minimum you need to maintain, and a $10 “activation fee” which is apparently in place to deter fraudulent users from signing up and dumping accounts.
