Criminal Investigation for Math Education
July 24, 2006Read moreA few days ago I wrote about reacquainting myself with mathematics. What started out as a mild recollection of past educational experience ended up raising negative feelings that flapped around my consciousness like angry ghosts. A buddy pointed this out, and after some reflection I laid them back to rest; there’s no sense in remaining angry about the past.
While Math had been a source of frustration for me, it wasn’t due to the math itself; it was the clouds of confusion surrounding the practice of Mathematics that so confounded me. This was exacerbated by my insistence on understanding something before doing it. Now that I know that there’s something good to be said for “learning to recognize and reproduce patterns” before understanding something, I am a lot more interested to tackling mathematics once again.
So here is how I’m seeing the challenge:
- I like the mysterious qualities of Math, and want to be more fluent with the ideas and concepts behind that.
- To do that, I’ll need to reconstruct the knowledge for myself, so I can have a clear picture of the relevant facts, principles, and standards of practice.
- However, there are barriers to reconstruction inherent in the presentation of the material: spotty instruction, missing/misunderstood key insights, ambiguous writing in textbooks, and misleading illustrations and diagrams. I groused about this at some length in my earlier post.

Something’s Up at the IconFactory
July 24, 2006Read moreTalos told me to check out the IconFactory website, and EVERYTHING HAS DISAPPEARED except for a funny QuickTime cartoon showing the W3C Police driving up to their warehouse and hassling them. Classic! Also, the texture effects on the warehouse itself is masterfully done…I can’t stop staring at it. There’s a series of mysterious numbers at the bottom of the screen; looks like there might be something new every day!!! Tune in!

Three Mindsets for Making Things
July 24, 2006Read moreI have tended to judge myself by what I know how to make. When I had my first stint at management, I wasn’t directly making anything, and it was very difficult for me to feel good about it. Over the years I’ve come to appreciate what a good manager does, and have seen that what I did was worthwhile. I learned how to see beyond individual achievement as my primary metric.
Still, there’s one thing that hasn’t changed for me, and that’s the desire to create quality product. It’s supremely important to me, and I tend to scope projects to the ability I have to do them well based on my personal knowledge and expertise. Quality. Competence. Experience. Expertise: These are the foundation of the kind of practice I am trying to build.
And this may be just what’s holding me back.

Akismet Jail
July 23, 2006Read moreIn a recent comment on my own blog, I linked to a ZIP archive I’d made for someone. After that, every one of my comments was flagged as spam. I guess posting a link in a comment is just one of those things YOU SHOULD NEVER DO, because it looks very phishy to spam filters. Spam is turning the blogosphere into something of a police state…sigh.

SIGGRAPH 2006 in Boston!
July 23, 2006Read moreYep, SIGGRAPH, the gigantic computer graphics conference, is in Boston again this year. The last SIGGRAPH I was at, I think, was in 1998. A lot has happened since then, and I think I need myself a bit of inspiration. I got myself a free exhibition pass, didn’t spring for the “Exhibits Plus” pass though (I may change my mind).
SIGGRAPH runs from Sunday, July 30 to Thursday, August 3, down at the Boston Exhibition & Convention Center. It should be a real pain in the butt to get to with the various problems with the Big Dig tunnels; I’ll probably end up driving to an outlying station and taking the T in from Alewife to South Station. Whee!
I hope I see some cool stuff…I could use a summer boost!
