Waiting for Action
November 1, 2006Read moreA few days ago, a friend of mine forwarded me this link to 10 Steps You Can Take To Guarantee Failure. Ordinarily I am a leery of top ten lists with “attention-grabbing” headlines, but since it was passed along by a buddy I checked it out. And a good thing too, because there was one item on the list that whacked my perspective in just the right way (emphasis mine):
Wait until you are motivated – Let’s face it, it’s much too difficult to go jogging or open a mutual fund account when you simply don’t feel like it. So just wait. Waiting gives you the peace of mind that someday, you might do something. But not yet, the timing isn’t right and you aren’t motivated anyway.
Motivation. Feeling. Waiting. These were familiar themes I have struggled with in the past. However, what’s NEW is my realization that I expect motivation to feel like something all-encompassing and dramatic. In my head, I’d be out enjoying the New England autumn, and then the Universe would manifest itself next to me, tap my shoulder with a smile, and whisper into my ear The time is now, Dave! Go! and THEN I’d know what it was I was supposed to do.
I’ve never consciously vocalized this expectation until just now, but I realize it’s true. Here’s a secret: beneath my hard-boiled “skill, competence, or death!” exterior beats the heart of a romantic. I have been expecting / wanting / hoping for a call to action. There’d be trumpets and smoke machines and disco lasers, and Ed McMahon himself would leading a procession bearing a GIANT CARDBOARD CHECK FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE’S SATISFACTION. I’d shake hands with Ed, smile for the cameras, and then buy a facility somewhere in the hills of New Hampshire to build my content creation empire. Mua ha ha ha!
Meanwhile, back on Earth, real-world Dave waits for the tap on the shoulder. And gets older.

Chipping Away at the Long Queue
October 23, 2006Read moreThis Monday morning I was thinking of the things I had to do, deliberately not freaking out about the long queue. But how do I start the process in the first place?
Ok, trying Just start! RrrRrrrRrrrRrrRrrrrrr.
Damn it, it’s not working. So now I’m checking my newly-minted process for clues on what to do next. It’s slightly tweaked from the previous version:
- Is it on my mind? Will it take less than two minutes to finish it? Do it, and stop thinking about it.
- Is it the next thing that’s due? Do until a good chunk is done. If there’s no explicit delivery date, then don’t worry about it. If there should be a delivery date, then find out when it should be and promise it to someone.
- Is it Worth Doing as part of your overall goals? Do that until a good chunk is done.
- Above all, don’t worry about the Long Queue…if you’re doing the above three things, you’ll probably be OK.
I’m bogging down on #2. Or actually, I’m doing #1, which is writing down my thought process in this blog post. I have to write one anyway; once this is done, my mind will be a little clearer.

Pine Needle Tea
October 21, 2006Read more
A few weeks ago, Dad and I were walking out by the river along the forest path. He mentions that when he was a youth, he was very interested in botany, which was both old and new information. I remembered Dad was very into plants for as long as I can remember, but this was the first time I’d heard that it had been a passion of his. “See these pine needles,” he said, “you can make a kind of tea out of these.” We haven’t brewed a pot of it yet (he brought some real tea back from Taiwan); maybe this week, we’ll try making the pine needle tea.

On Joining a Blogging Network: 9rules Round 5 Coming Up!
October 21, 2006Read moreSince moving my “non-work links” off my production computer, I’ve been more focused on work. However, I’ve forgotten to do two very important things:
- Read my online comics…I just caught up with two months worth of them!
- Check in on 9rules, the blog network that this site is affiliated with.
I just read the round 5 submissions are coming up; there’s a 24-hour window on October 25 (Wednesday) during which you can submit your application. Midnight October 25 (when the day rolls over at the end of October 24) is the beginning of the period.
There’s a lot of sites in 9rules these days, and of course there are lots of other blog networks too. There’s also been a bit of controversy and speculation about 9rules and its ultimate agenda. I can’t speak for 9rules, but I can describe my experience with the group. Your experience may be different, particularly if you have different/unspoken expectations.
