  • A Quiet Reflection on Failure: “Cliff Notes” Version

    December 9, 2012

I’ve been spending a lot of time reflecting on the past seven years of my effort to make something of this blogging life I have, as evidenced by A Quiet Reflection on Failure Part I and Part II. I thought that Part III would be a tidy wrapping up, but I’ve found it is more complex than I thought.

To regain focus, I made a summary of parts I and II so I could more clearly see the structure of my thinking process. It’s actually become more useful than I thought—take that, Uncertainty! For those following along, you may find this clarifying. I probably will go back based on this and refine the original articles so the leaps of logic I’m making are clearer.

So this is how writing is supposed to be! Review and refine! :)

  • Compact Calendar for 2013 Posted!

    December 7, 2012

Compact Calendar 2013 Yes, the 2013 Compact Calendar is finally uploaded!

There are not that many new features for this year. Last year, I added the ability to start the calendar from any day, so you can easily generate new calendars (even ones for next year). There are also a few formatting tweaks. As usually, I included PDFs in US Letter and A4 sizes as a convenience, for those of you who don’t feel like mucking about in Excel.

A few international versions are already up, maintained separately by a handful of conscientious adopters who update them every year. If you’d like to host your own, download the 2013 Compact Calendar package and modify it for your country, then upload it to a descriptive web page. Let me know about it, and I’ll link to it!

    Enjoy! :-)

  • A Quiet Reflection on Failure, Part I

    December 2, 2012

As 2012 wanes, I’ve been thinking about the seven year anniversary of my blog-driven, freelance design shot at the big time. In 2005 I’d lucked into blogging, finding it agreeable and rewarding. And with the modicum of recognition I’ve gained for my productivity tool designs I thought, “Hey, maybe I can turn this into an awesome, passionate life! Maybe I should find out!” I’ve written 1700 posts, spanning over a million words according to the word-counting plugin I just installed. Seven years is long enough to complete a Ph.D. program, and this has put me into a reflective mood: What have I learned? What have I contributed to my field of knowledge? Or have I spent seven years to earn a de-facto degree in navel gazing?

  • Groundhog Day Resolutions 11/11/2012: More of the Same

    November 11, 2012

SUMMARY: Yes, friends, it’s already time for this month’s Groundhog Day Resolutions review. This month, I lament the seeming lack of progress despite being busy. Perhaps it is just the lack of closing projects? Or is it a lack of commitment?
