Working Through the Project List

Working Through the Project List

It’s already Wednesday, and I’m feeling a little cloudy-headed about what epic project I should work on. I’m trying to use the new iPad to work at Starbucks now that I have a keyboard for it (a Logitech Tablet Keyboard, in case you’re curious).

The first thought was to look through my Wunderlist to see what queued projects are available. There are a lot of tasks queued up, and I’m deliberately not reacting negatively to them. However, I’m not feeling particularly inspired either by any of them. The next step in my advancement toward productivity today is to just pick something and work on it for five minutes.

Looking through the Wunderlist gives me ideas of what to do:

  • Begin the transition from MediaTemple (dv) 3.5 to (dv) 4.0, as they will be transitioning everyone from the old architecture to the new one. A pain in the ass! But I am not reacting to it with (much) annoyance. I can probably punt this for a while.

  • I could take pictures for the iPad Square Register App, which I can use to sell individual pads by credit card. However, this is not a huge line of revenue.

  • Oh, I should document the GAME CODE I was working on this month. That would be a new creative move, one that would go well toward establishing more interactive development work in the future. Plus I should do it while the memory is still fresh. I am not sure how I’ll go about doing this; I could plan something out, but I suspect that jumping in and working on it for 30 minutes will help clarify things. I just felt a twinge of anxiety about how much work this is, but I noted the feeling and took a deep breath. I won’t die from these tasks.

  • There is also the INDEX CARD DOCKS I need to work on, doing the second pass of coating after sanding.

  • On a related note, I have to clean up the basement and vacuum the living room. The cats have made a huge mess of it.

  • Marketing Collateral for the ETP Pads is on my list too.

  • As is working on the new design for the ETP one-month bound journals.

<

p>That’s enough tasks to start with. I feel a little pressure about getting all these things done. They are all tasks with unknown time requirements and resources. Let me COMMIT to this task list and plan it like a real work list.

STEP ONE

With a task list, I need to define a few things for each task:

  • The Project Context
  • The Tangible Deliverable
  • The Expected Benefit
  • Allocated Time (as opposed to Estimate)
  • Expiration Date (as opposed to Deadline)
  • Balance Category

This is a little different from my other task cards in that it’s designed for personal projects, not work projects. While the first three items are good for regular work tasks, the last three are designed to work within the personal project mindset.

The form factor I’ll use for these is custom index card format. Potentially I could design these as business card size, actually. I may do that for the sheer hell of it. Ok, this should be the FIRST task on the list.

  1. Hey there David. Just wanted to chime in and urge you not to punt the (dv) Dedicated-Virtual Server migration too far down the road. It’s coming up pretty soon. Let us know if there is anything we can help you with. We’re available 24/7 on Twitter or on the phone.
