A friend of mine just told me about a superstitious custom where, on the first of the month, the first thing you say is “Rabbit Rabbit” to bring you luck. I thought she had made it up, but Lo! There is an article regarding the custom on Wikipedia! I love these kinds of mysterious customs, especially the lucky ones. The problem is: now I want to say “rabbit rabbit” all the time. I can imagine my sis and I rabbit rabbiting at each other all day long, if we’d known about this when we were kids.

I used to play this version in college and for some years afterward (and it still crops up now and then):
“One variation involves an element of competition: Saying “rabbit, rabbit” to another person on the first of the month entitles the speaker to the luck of the listener for the duration of the month.”
Thanks for the link…I never knew anything about the history.

Heh, this is crazy weird because I actully do this and I’ve never known anyone else that does it. Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever even told anyone that I do this.
I started it my freshman year in high school because my art teacher told me about the custom. I think I’ve done it every month since. Sometimes I forget and it’s not the first thing I say but as soon as I remember to say it, I say quick anyway… better late than never..
pinch, punch, first of the month(along with appropriate actions.)That’s the variation I know. Rude awakening.
Pinch, Punch, first of the month, rabbit, rabbit.
