Thesis Moonbase Rendering
1995

I created a number of renders using 3D Studio R3 for my MFA Thesis. This Moon Base was one of the locations. I created the terrain in VistaPro 2.0 by abusing the lake builder, derived the maps from some more abuse of the color and tree mappers, and then took the whole thing into Photoshop to apply cratering and dust by hand.

One nice trick was to use the layered fog of 3DS R3...just a tiny bit above the floor. It adds to the dusty effect in the shadow of the crater rim. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough memory to really get the high-resolution cratering I wanted; this angle is the only direction that hides the edge of the world.
