• Sell tickets via Eventbrite. I just stumbled upon this.
• Try doing something like a Barcamp. You just really need to get a few people together that are geeky and social enough to put something together. There are many unconference approaches to borrow from.
• To find new people, you can use Meetup.com and start a local group, list on Upcoming.org, or use one of the Twitter apps that help you find local people.
