Avast! Talk Like A Pirate Day be September 19, shiver me timbers! Here be a basic primer, lifted from th’ how-to guide:
Ahoy! – “Hello!” Avast! – Stop and give attention. It can be used in a sense of surprise, “Whoa! Get a load of that!” which today makes it more of a “Check it out” or “No way!” or “Get off!” Aye! – “Why yes, I agree most heartily with everything you just said or did.” Aye aye! – “I’ll get right on that sir, as soon as my break is over.” Arrr! – This one is often confused with arrrgh, which is of course the sound you make when you sit on a belaying pin. “Arrr!” can mean, variously, “yes,” “I agree,” “I’m happy,” “I’m enjoying this beer,” “My team is going to win it all,” “I saw that television show, it sucked!” and “That was a clever remark you or I just made.” And those are just a few of the myriad possibilities of Arrr!

I first found out about ‘Talk like a Pirate Day’ freshman year of high school. Me and my friend, thinking it was a ploy to get people to look stupid, decided that the following week we would advertise our own day. Us, being freshman incapable of thinking up particularly good ‘National Days’ made it ‘National Throw Your Pen out the Window Day.’
The sad thing is..at least five people participated.

That’s an inspiring story in many ways…smelling the stink of “the man” on TLaPD, you and your cohorts take control by declaring your own national holiday! And you discover that when people lead, others follow! Even when you think maybe they shouldn’t.
I think the appeal of Talk like a Pirate day is for people who don’t get to be as silly as they secretly want to be. So many rules in the workplace and in “polite society”. And it may be the very image of being a pirate, sailing free on the seven seas, that people still find a certain romance in. Some of my favorite movies have pirates in them (“Pirates of the Carribean”, “The Princess Bride”), definitely some of my all-time favorite games (the brilliant “Monkey Island” I and II, for example). Today, I guess we have the same free-form action and freedom in “Grand Theft Auto”, jackin’ cars and pummeling people with sticks, but it just isn’t as fun. Actual pirates were real nasty people; maybe in 100 years, the stereotype of “inner city hoodlum” will be seen just as romantically as we toil beneath the iron fist of our robot masters…
I don’t find many people who are that excited about TLaPD in my local vicinity, so I never really get to properly celebrate. Arr!
