Cuisinart Fondue Pot My sis has been quite the source of cheesy fun lately!

First, she gave me a nice Cuisinart Electric Fondue Pot for Christmas. It’s awesome…it’s non-stick, heats up quick, has a breakaway safety plug, and can be used for oil fondue. The entire unit is dishwasher safe too, so cleanup is easy.

She’s also been sending me information about Cheese Shops. The latest bit is from Gothamist, an online zine about New York City that we both like (looking forward to the Bostonist when it becomes active). Anyway, for the ultimate in snooty eating, one can confidently assemble their own after dinner cheese platter using Gothamist’s handy cheese shopping tips.

  • Weaponized Robots

Weaponized Talon RobotI am a little freaked by this Wired article about the pending deployment of robot reconnaissance vehicles in Iraq:
Four cameras and a pair of night-vision binoculars allow the robot to operate at all times of the day. It has a range of about a half-mile in urban areas, more in the open desert. And with the ability to carry four 66-mm rockets or six 40-mm grenades, as well as an M240 or M249 machine gun, the robots can take on additional duties fast, said GlobalSecurity.org director John Pike.

As Pike notes, you can put these things where you wouldn’t want to put a soldier. And robots don’t have family at home, which is a good thing. Foster-Miller, the company that makes the Talon robot, is based here in New England…their name reminds me of something out of a William Gibson novel.

  • Guild Thoughts

    January 7, 2005

I was looking for a Screen Designers Guild online, just to see if such a thing existed. Nope! The idea of having an alliance of like-minded screen artisans is appealing, and it seems less egotistical than having something like “David Seah and Associates”. On the other hand, shying away from self-promotion doesn’t do me any favors either.

On the other hand, at this stage it’s more important to find independent individuals who share a similar goal: to create meaningful artifacts (digital or otherwise) of lasting quality and purpose. I’ve come to realize I have more of an artisan philosophy toward creating things, though I seem to lack the actual impulse to create in isolation.

That said, I just realized that the most effective way to create that impulse is to inject myself back into a place where the demands are immediate rather than words in a blog.

Next Steps: 1. methodology statement 2. cast methdology net 3. work work work

  • Dairy Distractions

    January 6, 2005

My sis, knowing of my search for locally-made butter, passed this blurb about Mendon Cream Butters that she received via her Daily Candy newsletter.

On a related note, Great Cheeses of New England has this map of cheesemakers. I’ve been buying my cheese at Impressive Chef’s cheese counter, and as a result I no longer can stomach supermarket cheese.

  • Live Journal’s Back End

    January 6, 2005

LiveJournal has been in the news recently for being purchased by the makers of Movable Type. Not being very knowledgable about LiveJournal, I was browsing around and found this description of the server architecture they use. It’s a set of slides that describe how they grew from one server to many. Although terse, it was fascinating to see how they evolved to the state they are at now, and as a result I’m more aware of the kind of issues that a growing website might face. A lot of interesting technology to investigate later, I think!
