Equivocality

POSTED 01/10/2007 UNDER QuickPosts

I've been trying to be better about keeping track of who's in the 9rules community, so I've been making a point of visiting every 9rules site I happen to see. One of the Round 5 inductees is Jeff Ngan, a blogger out of Canada who writes with literate-yet-conversational intensity, the kind of writing that sounds good when spoken aloud. His photos are really exceptional too; the combined experience is like reading a hybrid of Life Magazine and The Atlantic Monthly, focused on the experiences surrounding Jeff Ngan. Very inspiring! Check it out at Equivocality.

Citizen Agency and Work-Life Balance

POSTED 01/09/2007 UNDER QuickPosts

I've been talking on and off with Mark Reeves, who like me is on the hunt for some kind of rewarding balance between work and living. He shot me a link to Citizen Agency, specifically this post about looking over the horizon to find the right kind of happiness. As I browsed through the site, I was struck by their mission statement: Citizen Agency does have a mission: changing the world through empowering individuals. We believe in architecting for collaboration, not merely participation. Yep, that feels right. This is a piece of the puzzle...

A Rain of Frogs

POSTED 12/22/2006 UNDER QuickPosts

One of the new 9rules Network Round 5 inductees is A Rain of Frogs. It is such an awesome name that I had to check it out. I love the writing. Just love it.

Great Web Books of 2006

POSTED 12/21/2006 UNDER QuickPosts

I'm always up for a good book recommendation; I just got a heads-up that Digital Web Magazine has a growing list of great web-related books in the works. I hate weeding through terrible books, so this is a really great resource for me. As if my Amazon wish list wasn't long enough.

The Hirsute Mouse

POSTED 12/11/2006 UNDER QuickPosts

I was swishing around my favorite mouse (the Logitech MX300, no longer made) and was thinking Wow, the action on this mouse is much smoother than I remember so I flipped it over, and saw that a FELT MADE OF CAT HAIR had formed where the old adhesive had held the original plastic runners. I am grossed-out yet oddly pleased at this organic development; as I said, the mouse is working pretty well. Just don't look underneath it.

KK’s Personal Book Printing Recommendations

POSTED 12/09/2006 UNDER QuickPosts

Kevin Kelley, who currates the "useful working gadgets" site Cool Tools, recently posted his experiences with personal publishing through print-on-demand services. Did you know you could print a black and white 150 page book for $7? Or that you could print a high-quality 100-page coffee table book for $40? Or how about a mini-portfolio that fits in the palm of your hand? Sounds awesome. Kevin's post is wonderfully concise without being terse. Publish, baby, publish!

What am I doing right now? Not doing!

POSTED 12/08/2006 UNDER QuickPosts

There is a pretty awesome post on Focus and Distraction over on Creating Passionate Users, which has given me the insight that I---like many others---are addicted to distraction. It's fun to be in the loop! However, as the technology to efficiently distract ourselves approaches higher interruption-per-minute levels, our ability to reach that state of focus and flow is severely compromised. Many interesting citations too!

Information + Aesthetics = Infosthetics

POSTED 12/06/2006 UNDER QuickPosts

Scott Garman sent me this link to Infosthetics, a sweet blog covering data visualization and visual communication. It features acres and acres of heart-stopping examples of fine visualization and information graphic design. All you Tufte and Maeda fans out there who don't already know about this will love it.

Storing All That Jazz

POSTED 11/16/2006 UNDER QuickPosts

I was browsing Volkher Hofmann's Living with Music website Living With Music, which covers the enjoyment, collecting AND STORAGE of music. Did I say STORAGE? I LOVE STORAGE! I like the practical and personal way he describes his use of inexpensive retail shelving like the IKEA Ivar, which apparently requires nothing but a screwdriver to put together. The thoughtful way in which Volkher considers the shelving with regards to his needs is quite enjoyable. So check out his Storage and Display articles for the low-down on storing CDs and vinyl, then hang out for the relaxed musical commentary. Great stuff!

Firefox’s BEYOND ANNOYING Find-as-you-Type Bug

POSTED 11/13/2006 UNDER QuickPosts

Every once in a while, I dutifully upgrade Firefox to the next release. Then, I have to again figure out WHY THE @%! that the #&$@! FIND AS YOU TYPE @#!*?! FEATURE gets enabled when I type the ' (single quote) key. WHY LORD, WHY? It's intermittent too. Fortunately, some light has been shed on this (mutter) issue at Adam Messinger's blog, along with a suggested solution.
